Hi, I’m Jaclyn, a mixed media artist and designer living in Portland, Or.

My work often pushes the boundaries of traditional techniques by mixing materials and processes. I primarily work with alternative photography processes, like cyanotype and gum bichromate, layering over them with brightly colored gouache paint; but lately I’ve been exploring other types of mixed media work, like my beaded pieces.

Artist Statement & Inspiration

To some people, it seems that each memory we own lives as a time-stamped postcard of a three-dimensional moment; frozen, waiting patiently to be called on and referenced periodically as we move through life.

In reality, memory is much more fluid—dipping and flowing through the curves of our mind, mailable, always taking a new shape. The truth is, every time you pull one of those saved moments-in-time off the shelf of your mind, you put it back just a tiny bit different.

In those moments of private recollection, we impose our own sense of order on the landscape of our mind. Painting on the mood that feels right, silently narrating our past selves with the observations and opinions of our present self. Putting the memory back, but differently.

I wonder at the extent of this mental fluidity. Does there exist any true opportunity to capture, document, and preserve the moments that memories exist to remind us of? What happens to a memory that fades?

My art serves as an exercise in retaining and maintaining memories—an attempt to preserve the feeling of both the past and present and what that means to us over time. Each piece is a visual meditation on how we remember spaces and time.

2014 Curation & Break

Starting in 2014, I took an extended break from making art to reevaluate my work and intentions. This decision was influenced heavily by the lack of resources for the genre of work I was making as well as burnout. The break lasted from 2014-2019.
